Athlete Voices: Insights from the Season 2 Media Launch Panel

To close the Media Launch for Season 2 of the Rescue Sport Series, the spotlight turned to the athletes themselves — the heartbeat of our sport. From the pool to the beach, from Nippers to National Teams, each athlete brought their own story, their goals, and their excitement for the season ahead. Conrad Scheepers: From Swimmer to Lifesaver

Conrad, a former Tuks University swimmer, has made an impact since joining Clifton Surf Lifesaving Club just three years ago. Last season, he claimed every Open Men’s Pool Rescue title, but one moment stood out: hitting a personal best in the Manikin Carry despite losing his one fin, mid-race.

For Conrad, lifesaving has reignited his passion for training — but with a twist. “In swimming it was all about me. In lifesaving, it’s about what you can do for everyone else.” He’s also surprised himself in the surf, picking up a silver in the Board Relay at Western Cape Champs after learning to paddle only a year earlier.

Looking ahead, Conrad is focused on chasing more PBs while fending off the hungry young athletes stepping into Opens. With Clifton hosting two events this season, he’s ready to use his “home beach advantage” — and maybe a shore break or two — to stay at the top.

Nicola Harcus: Rising Through the Ranks

Nicola’s lifesaving journey began in the Eastern Cape, but now she’s a proud Western Cape athlete and a multiple-time National Team representative in both surf and pool. Last year, she split her time between Under-19 and Open divisions, while juggling studies at varsity.

Now stepping fully into Opens, Nicola relishes the challenge of racing against an “insane pool of athletes.” Her passion for lifesaving runs deep: “At the end of the day, we’re saving lives. Whether it’s in the pool or the ocean, the skills make you a better athlete and a better lifesaver.”

She describes the Rescue Sport Series as a “mini tour of the Western Cape” — a circuit that sharpens athletes across varied beaches and builds friendships along the way. For Nicola, it’s not just about chasing results, but about being part of an initiative that keeps athletes in the sport and creates opportunities to grow season after season.

Javin Presence: The Beach Powerhouse

Originally drawn into lifesaving through athletics, Javin has built his reputation as a beach competitor. A Western Cape athlete and last season’s Under-19 Flags champion, he now steps into Opens while also preparing for international competition in New Zealand later this year.

His goals are clear: consistent top-eight finishes in board, and a place in the Nationals final. Prize money isn’t the motivation. “Regardless of the money, I’m there to compete. I always want to come out on top.”

He credits Western Cape’s dominance in national beach squads to the region’s hard training culture and competitive environment. Returning to his home beach, Milnerton, in January will be a highlight: “It’s always unpredictable — uphill tracks, interesting waves — but that’s what makes it exciting.”

Kira Bester: The Champion Returns

The reigning and youngest-ever Surf Ski World Champion, Kira’s comeback at the end of last season was one of the biggest stories of Western Cape Champs. She swept the Open Ladies ski events and proved she still has the fire in both board and swim.

For Kira, returning was about rediscovering joy: “I had no expectations, just to have fun. But as soon as the whistle went, the nerves disappeared and it felt like I was back.”

She sees the Rescue Sport Series as a platform South Africa has long needed. “We don’t have to spend thousands to race in Australia. This series gives us a world-class stage at home.” With Worlds coming to South Africa next year, her message was clear: this is the moment to get back into the sport.

Looking ahead, Kira is most excited about the new mixed events — relays and doubles — that will test the depth of clubs across all disciplines.

Looking Ahead to Season 2

The Athlete Panel reminded us why the Rescue Sport Series matters. These athletes balance studies, training, and international competition while staying rooted in the values of lifesaving: teamwork, service, and community.

Season 2 promises more events, fresh rivalries, and a chance for athletes — old and new — to leave their mark. Whether in the pool or on the sand, this is where South Africa’s best come to race, to grow, and to inspire.
